The SWP Calculator helps you plan a Systematic Withdrawal Plan, where you invest a lump sum and withdraw a fixed amount at regular intervals while the rest stays invested. You enter your total investment, your monthly withdrawal, an expected return, and your time period, and the calculator shows how much you will withdraw in total and how much of your corpus is likely to remain. It's a quick, free way to see whether your planned withdrawals are sustainable before you start.

What is an SWP?

A Systematic Withdrawal Plan, or SWP, is essentially the reverse of a SIP. Instead of putting money in every month, you invest a lump sum once and take a fixed amount out at regular intervals, usually monthly. The portion of your money that stays invested continues to earn market-linked returns, while your withdrawals gradually draw the corpus down. People often use an SWP to create a regular cash flow from their investments, for example during retirement or a career break. It is important to understand that the withdrawals are fixed, but the returns are not, they depend on the market.

What is the SWP Calculator?

The SWP Calculator is an online tool that estimates the outcome of a systematic withdrawal plan. You provide your initial investment, your monthly withdrawal, an assumed return, and your tenure, and it works out your total withdrawals and your remaining balance at the end of the period. It lets you test different withdrawal amounts and see whether your corpus is likely to last, so you can plan realistically. The figures are estimates; actual returns are market-linked and will vary.

How Does the SWP Calculator Work?

Each month, your remaining corpus earns a return and your fixed withdrawal is taken out. Over the full period, the calculator uses this formula:

Final Value = PV × (1 + i)n − W × ( [ (1 + i)n − 1 ] ÷ i )

where PV is your initial investment, W is your monthly withdrawal, i is your annual return divided by 12, and n is the number of months. The first part grows your corpus at the assumed return; the second part represents everything you have withdrawn. The difference is what remains. The key thing this shows is the balance between your withdrawal and your return: if you withdraw less than your corpus earns, the balance can stay steady or even grow; if you withdraw more than it earns, the balance shrinks every month.

How to Use the Indiabulls Securities SWP Calculator

It takes only a few seconds. Enter your total investment, the lump sum you are starting with. Set the monthly withdrawal you want to take. Add an expected annual return; for an SWP, investors often assume a conservative figure, since these plans are frequently run from debt-oriented or hybrid funds, though it varies by scheme. Choose your time period in years. The calculator instantly shows your total withdrawals and your estimated remaining balance, so you can adjust the withdrawal until the plan looks sustainable.

Benefits of Using an SWP Calculator

  • Plan a regular cash flow. See how a fixed monthly withdrawal draws on your corpus over time.
  • Test sustainability. Check whether your planned withdrawals are likely to leave a balance or exhaust the corpus.
  • Skip the complex maths. The month-by-month calculation is done instantly and accurately.
  • Compare scenarios. Adjust the withdrawal amount, return, or tenure to find a plan you are comfortable with.

SWP Calculation Example

Suppose you invest ₹10,00,000, withdraw ₹8,000 a month, assume an 8 per cent annual return, and run the plan for 10 years. Over the decade you would withdraw ₹9,60,000 in total, and your remaining balance at the end would be roughly ₹7.56 lakh. Notice that although you started with ₹10 lakh and drew ₹9.6 lakh out, you are left with less than you began with, ₹7.56 lakh, because your withdrawals were higher than what the corpus earned in some periods. If you had withdrawn only ₹6,000 a month instead, the corpus would actually have grown, to around ₹11.2 lakh, because your withdrawals would have been below your returns. This is why the withdrawal amount you choose matters so much.

(Note: this is an illustrative example; actual returns are market-linked and will vary.)

Will Your Money Last? Understanding Corpus Depletion

The single most important thing to understand about an SWP is that your money can run out. Your withdrawals are fixed, but your returns are not, so the outcome depends on the balance between the two. If your withdrawal rate is lower than your investment's return, your corpus can sustain the withdrawals and may even grow. If your withdrawal rate is higher than your return, the corpus shrinks every month and will eventually reach zero. A run of weak market returns early on can drain it faster than the average return would suggest. The calculator lets you see this for yourself, raise the withdrawal amount and watch the remaining balance fall, so you can set a level you are comfortable with. An SWP is a flexible way to draw a regular cash flow from your investments, but it is not a guaranteed income, and it does not offer assured returns.

Tax on SWP

Each SWP withdrawal is treated as a partial redemption of your mutual fund units, so it can attract capital gains tax. Whether it is taxed as short-term or long-term gains depends on the type of fund and how long the units were held, and only the gain portion of each withdrawal is taxed, not the whole amount. Tax rules can change, so check the current treatment or consult a tax adviser before setting up an SWP.
