FD Calculator
The FD Calculator helps you estimate the maturity value and the interest you will earn on a fixed deposit. You enter your deposit amount, the interest rate, and the tenure, and the calculator instantly shows how much your deposit will grow to and how much of that is interest. It is a quick, free way to compare deposits and plan before you lock your money in.
What is a Fixed Deposit?
A fixed deposit, or FD, is a savings product offered by banks and NBFCs where you deposit a lump sum for a fixed period at a fixed, predetermined interest rate. Unlike market-linked investments, the rate is agreed upfront and does not change with the market, so you know at the start exactly what your deposit will be worth at maturity. This certainty is why FDs are popular for money you cannot afford to put at risk. Bank deposits are also covered by deposit insurance up to the prescribed limit, which adds to their appeal for conservative savers.
What is the FD Calculator?
The FD Calculator is an online tool that works out the maturity value and interest on a fixed deposit. You provide the principal, the interest rate, and the tenure, and it returns your maturity amount and the interest earned. It saves you the compounding maths and lets you compare different amounts, rates, and tenures in seconds, so you can choose the deposit that suits you. It models a cumulative FD, where interest is compounded and paid at maturity.
How Does the FD Calculator Work?
For a cumulative fixed deposit, Indian banks typically compound interest every quarter. The calculator uses the compound interest formula:
A = P × (1 + r/n)(n × t)
where P is your principal, r is the annual interest rate, n is the number of times interest is compounded per year (4 for quarterly), and t is the tenure in years. Your interest earned is simply the maturity amount minus your principal. Because interest is added to the balance each quarter and then itself earns interest, a cumulative FD grows a little faster than a simple-interest calculation would suggest.
How to Use the Indiabulls Securities FD Calculator
It takes only a few seconds. Enter your deposit amount, then the annual interest rate offered on the FD, and finally the tenure in years (or months). The calculator instantly shows your maturity value and the total interest you will earn. You can adjust the rate or tenure to compare deposits and see how a slightly higher rate or a longer term changes your returns.
Benefits of Using an FD Calculator
- Know your maturity value upfront. See exactly what your deposit will grow to before you commit.
- Compare deposits easily. Test different rates and tenures to find the best fit.
- Skip the compounding maths. The quarterly-compounding calculation is done instantly and accurately.
- Plan with certainty. Because FD returns are fixed, the calculator gives you a firm figure to plan around.
FD Calculation Example
Suppose you deposit ₹1,00,000 in a fixed deposit at 7 per cent per annum for 5 years, with interest compounded quarterly. At maturity, your deposit would grow to ₹1,41,478, meaning you earn ₹41,478 in interest. It is worth noting that if the same deposit earned simple interest instead of compound interest, you would earn only ₹35,000, so quarterly compounding adds ₹6,478 over the five years. That difference is the benefit of compounding, and it grows larger with longer tenures.
FD vs Market-Linked Investments: Which Is Right for You?
A fixed deposit gives you certainty: a fixed rate, a known maturity value, and no exposure to market movements. That makes it well suited to money you want to keep safe or need at a specific time. Market-linked investments, such as mutual funds or stocks, work differently, their returns are not fixed and can rise or fall with the market, so they carry risk, but over the long term they offer the potential for higher growth. Neither is simply better; they serve different purposes. Many people keep an emergency fund or short-term money in FDs for safety, while investing longer-term money in market-linked options for growth. The right mix depends on your goals, your time horizon, and how much risk you are comfortable with. You can compare a monthly SIP plan using our SIP Calculator →.
Tax on FD
Interest earned on a fixed deposit is fully taxable and is added to your income, taxed at your applicable slab rate. Banks deduct TDS (tax deducted at source) on FD interest once it crosses the prescribed annual limit, and you can submit the relevant form to avoid TDS if your income is below the taxable threshold. Tax rules can change, so check the current rules or consult a tax adviser.
